Washington

George Washington was a Virginian, but New York was a central city in his life. At the start of the revolution, the British made it a priority to take New York. They wanted it for its harbor. The Continental Congress had made Washington a commander of Continental forces. He attempted to defend New York from the British, who sent to New York Harbor the largest fleet any nation had ever sent to a place other than England. General Washington had moved his troops to New York and had set up batteries all along the coast. In early July of 1776, Patriots saw a large fleet of British ships coming toward the New York Bay. General William Howe led these British troops and drove the Continental army off of Long Island. Washington’s troops retreated to Manhattan, New York. The British had many many more troops and were better equipped than the Patriots. Washington had to use his leadership skills just to save his greatly outnumbered army. In a series of battles, Howe had forced the Continental army to keep retreating over and over again. The British had captured many Patriots and their valuable supplies. After many months, they had pushed Washington’s army out of New York. He had make a HUGE mistake by leaving some of his troops in Manhatten. He then sent the rest of them to Long Island.
